Training & Consultation

Sustainability Training

Regional demand for trained and qualified sustainability professionals is expected to grow substantially over the coming few years. This demand is driven by ever-increasing government legislation and mounting social pressure to protect and sustain the environment. All new projects, (whether private, commercial or government) will eventually require green ratings and sustainability certification at various stages of design, construction and operation.

The Green Office Company has partnered with Everblue (one of the world’s leading green educators) to offer a range of training and preparatory courses. Most courses are designed as two-day programmes and can be attended by anyone interested in starting a career in sustainability. Existing professionals, for example civil engineers and architects, can also attend these courses to enhance their qualifications and become eligible to work on projects requiring formal certification.

Certification

The Green Office Company skilfully assists clients in acquiring environmental ratings and applying for various building certifications such as LEED, BREEAM and Estidama. Our team of highly-trained consultants leverages many years of experience to offer cost-effective certification solutions:

  • We work closely with the client to define and set a clear and adequate environmental budget.
  • Throughout the project we help the client adhere to the budget and desired certification goal.
  • We engineer for “life cycle value” rather than “first-cost” and choose the most effective green technologies.
  • We use our experience to identify opportunities for earning extra certification credits without incurring additional costs.

LEED

Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1998, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a system for rating the design, construction and operation of green buildings. LEED works by providing both building owners and operators with a systematic framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.

Currently, LEED consists of nine rating systems and 100 possible base points distributed across five major credit categories:

  • Sustainable Sites
  • Water Efficiency
  • Energy and Atmosphere
  • Materials and Resources
  • Indoor Environmental Quality

Buildings can qualify for four levels of LEED certification:

  • Certified (40-49 points)
  • Silver (50-59 points)
  • Gold (60-79 points)
  • Platinum (80 points and above)

LEED certification is granted by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), and requires a formal application to be submitted which clearly documents the project’s compliance with the various rating systems.

The Green Office Company expertly guides your project through every stage of the LEED application process to ensure a smooth and efficient certification.

BREEAM

Developed in the UK by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in 1990, the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is a voluntary measurement rating which assesses the sustainability of new non-domestic buildings.

Currently BREAM is regarded as the world's leading design and assessment method for sustainable buildings. It evaluates a building’s specification, design, construction and use, and compares these against established benchmarks. BREEAM measurements include:

  • Energy and water use
  • Internal environment (health and well-being)
  • Pollution
  • Transport
  • Materials
  • Waste
  • Ecology
  • Management processes

BREEAM uses a two-stage assessment process, spanning the design stage as well as post construction. A certificated BREEAM assessment can only be delivered by a licensed organisation (using assessors trained under a UKAS accredited agency) at various stages in a building’s life cycle.

The Green Office Company expertly guides your project through every stage of the BREEAM application process to ensure a smooth and efficient certification.

Estidama

Developed by the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC), Estidama (the Arabic word for sustainability) is a building design methodology for constructing and operating sustainable buildings and communities. Unlike LEED or BREEAM, Estidama is not a green building rating system. Instead it is a collection of ideals and values that are presented as an elective building code to be shared by the community at large.

However Estidama has also developed a system to assess green buildings which is known as the Pearl Rating System. As of 2010, by order of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council:

  • New communities, villas and private buildings must achieve a minimum 1 Pearl rating
  • New government projects (such as schools, mosques and government buildings) must achieve a minimum of 2 Pearls

There are 3 kinds of Pearl Ratings:

  • Design Rating (must be submitted before the building permit is approved)
  • Construction Rating (must be submitted at the end of construction)
  • Operational Rating (must be submitted once the project has reached a stable and suitable level of occupancy, generally 2 years)

The Green Office Company expertly guides your project through every stage of the Pearl Rating System application process to ensure a smooth and efficient certification.

Consultation

The Green Office Company is a versatile and trusted consultant for a variety of assessments and audits. We help organisations optimise energy usage, reduce operational overhead, and contribute towards a healthier and more sustainable environment. All our assessments and audits are conducted by trained and certified teams who professionally evaluate and submit reports based on international standards and best practice.

Energy Calculation

Reducing carbon emissions is an integral part of an organisation’s overall commitment to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. A substantial reduction in carbon emissions can not only earn certification credits, but also generate positive publicity and brand awareness.

The objective of our Energy Calculation is to identifying areas where carbon emissions can be reduced or ideally eliminated (through the use of alternate technologies). Depending on the client’s brief, either a specific area of an organisation or its entire operation can be evaluated for carbon emissions, followed by a report which includes tangible recommendations for emission reduction.

Energy Efficiency

Reducing energy loss and optimising energy usage not only makes sound business sense but also benefit the environment. Additionally, a higher energy efficiency rating can sometimes help a company earn extra certification credits or qualify for special awards and official recognition.

The objective of our Energy Efficiency assessment is to critically examine an organisation’s energy consumption to determine its efficiency and make recommendations for optimising usage. We advise that Energy Efficiency assessments be conducted on a regular basis since new technologies and processes can offer substantial reductions in energy consumption accompanied by even higher operational efficiencies.

Energy Audit

It can be useful for an organisation to have a clear picture of its energy requirements, actual usage and prevalent trends. Such detailed information can help a company make better and more informed decisions to optimise its energy expenditure, budget for future growth and streamline certain operational areas.

The objective of our Energy Audit is to investigate and present a comprehensive review of an organisation’s total energy usage (or if desired, focusing on a specific branch, premises or area of operation). Our audit teams skilfully evaluate and report on different kinds of energy usage while also monitoring consumption trends and determining base requirements.

Carbon Offset

Offices and commercial buildings account for a substantial part of global carbon emissions. As awareness grows, the demand for low carbon spaces is increasing. Not only do low carbon spaces strengthen brand image by generating positive PR, they also help to reduce energy costs while satisfying various certification requirements. However, even with best practice and diligent methodology, it is not always possible to achieve total carbon neutrality.

The Green Office Company assists clients in offsetting carbon emissions incurred during a project. For example, if you would like your new corporate headquarters to attract positive publicity for being built and commissioned as a carbon-neutral project, then we can help you offset the entire project’s emissions.

There are different kinds of sustainability projects designated for carbon offsetting, including:

  • Solar power
  • Wind farms
  • Hydroelectric dams
  • Biomass energy
  • Energy efficiency projects
  • Forestry projects

For optimum results it is best to specify your carbon neutral goals at the beginning so that the entire project can be undertaken with as low a carbon footprint as possible. However, carbon offsetting can also be implemented retroactively or at any stage in a project. The process involves an audit of your carbon emissions at various stages and then recommendations for reducing and offsetting the emissions.
